When people talk about Rayas they use one descriptor more than any other: "magic". The special, fine sand throughout the vineyard (no typical galets here) is magic. The pine trees surrounding the vineyard produce a magical microclimate. Emmanuel Reynaud (owner and winemaker) has a magical touch with Grenache.
There's a good reason for this: the deep complexity and elegance that these wines possess doesn't seem possible, especially in the context of the wines (many of them top notch) produced nearby. For Chateauneuf lovers Rayas is in a league of its own, a completely different, completely wild and wonderful animal.
