What is this wine?
Clos du Jaugueyron Haut-Médoc 2020 is a certified organic Bordeaux red crafted by Michel Théron, a small-scale producer based in Arsac, just south of Margaux. The wine comes from gravel and clay soils within the Haut-Médoc appellation and is composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small portions of Petit Verdot. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts, and aging takes place in French oak barrels (about 20–30% new) for around a year. Théron’s approach emphasizes finesse, freshness, and minimal intervention — a rare Burgundian touch in Bordeaux.

Why get this wine?
Clos du Jaugueyron is one of the Médoc’s rising stars, producing wines of remarkable purity and balance from low-yield, organically farmed vineyards. The 2020 vintage combines the ripeness of a warm year with the estate’s hallmark restraint, resulting in a wine that’s both vibrant and structured. It’s a top choice for drinkers who appreciate classical Bordeaux with artisanal flair.

What does this wine taste like?
Medium-bodied and refined, with aromas of blackcurrant, plum, graphite, and violet. The palate is silky yet energetic, showing fine tannins and a long, mineral finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Drink 2025–2035. Decant for an hour if enjoyed young. Ideal with roast beef, duck breast, or mushroom dishes.

Michel Theron (of Margaux estate Clos du Jaugueyron) is one of our favorite winemakers in Bordeaux, one of a handful of vignerons who are making the region truly exciting again.

Theron farms biodynamically, which is still weird for Bordeaux, and almost impossible to do in the Médoc. It takes guts (and maybe a little insanity) to pull it off year after year. But he does.

The cellar work is delightfully low-tech and low-intervention, with the wines aged in mostly neutral barrels or cement – practices diametrically opposed to those of big châteaux like Palmer, Margaux etc.

But none of that tells you how good the wines are. They are phenomenal. Like the great Patsy Cline, they are thoughtful and refined without the subtlest sacrifice of soul or purity.

Despite the natural approach, Theron's wine is not wild, funky affairs –they are transparent and convincing reminders that Bordeaux has some of the greatest terroirs in the world.
