Collemattoni is a relatively small, family owned and operated winery about 2 miles south/south west of Montalcino. The Bucci family has been farming here since the late 1800's, Marcello Bucci is the current proprietor. He and his team farm 11 hecatares of mostly Sangiovese using organic methods. The vineyards are all around 350-400 meters in elevation and the soils are sandy clay with streaks of limestone and marl.
The winery is a wonderful mix of innovation and tradition. They use biomass heating and solar panels to produce 80% of their energy. The cellar is designed for gentleness and efficiency; with de-stemmed grapes gravity fed into tanks for fermentation then large barrels for aging. Brunello is aged for 30 months in Slavonian oak before resting in bottle an additional 6-12 months. The Rosso spends 12 months in the same Slavonian oak and several months aging in bottle.
