What is this wine?
Maison Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880, is one of Burgundy’s most respected domaines, known for its dedication to organic and biodynamic farming and for producing elegant, terroir-driven wines. Les Amoureuses is Chambolle-Musigny’s most celebrated premier cru, often described as “grand cru in all but name,” lying just below Musigny and famed for its seductive perfume and silky texture. The 2016 vintage was marked by devastating frost and low yields, but the surviving fruit produced wines of intensity, purity, and remarkable aging potential.

Why get this wine?
Les Amoureuses is one of the most coveted sites in all of Burgundy, and Drouhin’s interpretation is consistently among the finest. In the frost-limited 2016 vintage, production was tiny, making this already rare bottling exceptionally collectible. For Burgundy lovers, it represents one of the purest and most graceful expressions of Pinot Noir.

What does this wine taste like?
Vivid red cherry, raspberry, and strawberry with rose petal, spice, and chalky minerality. Ethereal and perfumed, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a finish of haunting length.

When should you drink this wine?
Best 2026–2042. Decant gently if opening young. Pairs beautifully with duck breast, squab, or truffle dishes.

Founded in 1880, Drouhin is generally considered to be the top tier of the larger Maisons in Burgundy. But today it has more land ownership than purchase agreements and acts as a large domaine that occasionally purchases fruit and leases land.

Maurice Drouhin began reducing chemical treatments in the vineyards way back in 1957, and for the past 3 decades now the Drouhins have been converting all their vineyards and fruit sources to biodynamic farming. They are considered leaders in biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy and throughout France.

"(Don't Miss! Outstanding An exceptionally fresh and bright nose mixes ultra-pure red berry fruit aromas with those of similar spice and floral notes. The mouth feel is slightly finer than that of the Petits Monts as the mid-palate is suave and supple yet the gorgeously textured backend tightens up considerably and displays superb intensity on the mouth coating and stony finish. This classy and lacy effort should also be very special." -Allen Meadows

"(Drouhin lost more than half of the crop here, making the wine with 35% whole clusters--as with the Clos Vougeot and Grands-Echézeaux--in order to get a bit more volume for the vinification): Moderately saturated medium red. Alluring aromas of raspberry, minerals and flowers. Concentrated, savory wine with a very fine-grained texture and lovely balance to its red berry and spice flavors. Youthfully reticent but already much more harmonious than the Grands-Echézeaux. This very silky, delicate Amoureuses finishes firm and long, with its well-integrated tannins nicely supported by fruits and spices and a note of faded rose providing lift." -Stephen Tanzer

"The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses has a beautiful bouquet with tightly wound violet-tinged black fruit, becoming a little more earthy and introverted with aeration. The palate is sensual and rounded on the entry with veins of blueberry and cassis that soon give way to quite a spicy and powerful finish. While not in the same class as the previous two vintages, this is still a serious, quite cerebral yet luxuriant Amoureuses that is beautifully crafted." -Neal Martin

"Cask sample. 16 months in oak, of which 30% new. 30% whole cluster. Badly hailed like the whole village. Tiny production but saved some using the candles. This wine inspires her for Oregon, says Véronique Drouhin. ‘This is the wine that is true Pinot.’ Light to mid cherry red. Beautifully scented, with a light floral note as well as the red fruit and just slightly stemmy. Refined but dry in texture, deep in fruit to counterbalance the tannins. The tannins are sweet on the finish, gently chewy. " -Julia Harding MW
