What is this wine?

Best known for his extraordinary white Burgundies, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey (PYCM) also produces a small number of reds that show the same precision, energy, and terroir transparency that define his style. Based in Chassagne-Montrachet, Pierre-Yves sources Pinot Noir from select, responsibly farmed vineyards and vinifies with native yeasts, minimal extraction, and gentle élevage in mostly used oak barrels.
The Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru “Aux Boudots” 2023 comes from one of the appellation’s finest Premier Crus, located at the northern end of Nuits-Saint-Georges, on the border with Vosne-Romanée. The vineyard’s mix of limestone and clay soils yields wines that combine Nuits’ firm structure with Vosne’s aromatic grace—perfumed, supple, and deeply expressive.

Why get this wine?

This rare cuvée represents a meeting of precision and power, interpreted through PYCM’s elegant, restrained lens. “Aux Boudots” is one of the Côte de Nuits’ most coveted sites, and in 2023 it offers a perfect balance of ripe, pure fruit and mineral lift. With tiny production and a style that favors finesse over weight, it’s a fascinating and collectible expression of Nuits-Saint-Georges.

What does this wine taste like?

Fragrant and complex, with red cherry, raspberry, rose petal, and exotic spice. The palate is silky and finely structured, with refined tannins, bright acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish.

When should you drink this wine?

Drink 2028–2042. Decant young bottles for at least an hour. Ideal with duck, venison, or earthy mushroom dishes.

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey became a star for all kinds of reasons.

Partly, it was because he was an early master of a style of white Burgundy that has now become very popular: less oaky (thanks in part to larger barrels), no lees-stirring, earlier picked, a bit more reductive. The aim is not to make the fat wines that were still popular when he was starting out, but rather expressive wines that were chiseled and precise. His wines do all of this so well that he persuaded the rest of us to go along for the ride.

He also became a star because of critical acclaim, and it was the right kind of critical acclaim for the moment. Way back in 2008 Jancis Robinson wrote up PYCM and headlined it: “Making Chassagne more like Riesling”, capturing the style of these wines perfectly. Only Jancis could make a star of Klaus-Peter Keller by comparing his Rieslings to white Burgundy and a star of PYCM by comparing his white Burgundies to Riesling!

But we think he also became a star for a reason that some may overlook: he has long been a champion of Burgundy’s so-called lesser terroirs, and he has been able to make from them incredible wines that can reach a larger audience.
