Cantemerle is one of the rare crus-classés to hail from Haut-Médoc – a 5th growth located just beyond AOC Margaux’s borders. Unsurprisingly, it drinks quite a bit like a Margaux; it’s Cabernet-based (yet softer than a Pauillac or Saint-Estephe), and with age it develops an expressive perfume, with good complexity and a slightly ‘sauvage’ quality to its fruit.But, because it’s not a true Margaux, Cantemerle is perennially undervalued on the market, which makes it a bit of an “insider’s” wine. We love that. We also love how, despite its ability to age, Cantemerle tends to be a little softer and more approachable than it’s cru classé peers.
