The Jacques Lassaigne Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut ‘Les Vignes de Montgueux’ NV is a vibrant expression of 100% Chardonnay, showcasing the unique terroir of Montgueux, often referred to as the “Montrachet of Champagne.” Crafted by the Lassaigne family, this cuvée is a blend of grapes from 7 to 9 distinct parcels and three successive vintages. Vinified with minimal intervention, the wine undergoes extended lees aging to develop complexity and is bottled with minimal dosage, resulting in an Extra Brut style that emphasizes freshness and precision.

On the nose, this Champagne opens with lively aromas of green apples, white peach, and freshly baked bread, accented by notes of pastry cream and subtle chalky minerality. The palate is taut and racy, offering vibrant acidity and flavors of citrus and orchard fruits, leading to a long, chalky finish that underscores its purity and finesse.

This Champagne pairs beautifully with oysters, seared scallops, or sushi, where its minerality and crisp acidity elevate the flavors of the dish. It also makes a sophisticated aperitif, setting the tone for any refined occasion. While already approachable for its freshness and energy, the Jacques Lassaigne ‘Les Vignes de Montgueux’ NV will reward careful cellaring over the next 2–3 years, unveiling even greater nuance and complexity. It is a testament to the Lassaigne family’s mastery of terroir-driven Champagne.

Montgueux, a village in the Côte de Bar, is one of Champagne's best kept secrets. It's a prized component of many top maisons' blanc de blanc blends, but only recently have we been given the opportunity to experience the wine on its own. No one has been more dedicated to the revival of this once great, then completely abandoned, and newly rediscovered region than Emmanuel Lassaigne, of Champagne Jacques Lassaigne.

Just west of Troyer's, the medieval-era capital of Champagne, Montgueux is an isolated hill. It slowly fell into obscurity until the ravages of phylloxera in the late 19th century, when it was completely abandoned. Only in the 1960s — nearly 80 years later — did growers start to replant. But it didn't take long for houses like Charles Heidsieck to take note, referring to it as the “Montrachet of Champagne.”

The village is technically part of the Côte de Bar, Champagne's most southerly subregion of undulating hills, famous for Pinot Noir, Kimmeridgian limestone and clay soils, and warmer temperatures. Montgueux is planted with 95% Chardonnay, receives the benefit of the warmer growing season, and faces south-south-east on an outcropping of chalk.

It's like combining the aspect of Aÿ and the chalk of Les-Mesnil-sur-Oger with the temperatures of the Aube. This combination of features give its wines an unmistakable signature of pineapple flavors, a powerful structure and intense chalky mineral backbone. But until Emmanuel started estate bottling in 1999, we were never able to experience it on its own.

While a few other growers have followed suit, none of them has the same mastery of vines and wines as Emmanuel. He refuses organic certification, but practices organic viticulture, and farms to encourage vines healthy enough to fight diseases themselves, claiming he hasn't harvested rotten grapes in years. Sulphur is used only at the press, fermentations are spontaneous, and disgorgement completely by hand.

"The latest release of Lassaigne's NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Vignes de Montgueux is a blend of the 2016, 2015 and 2014 vintages, and is disgorged à la volée without dosage. Offering up a lively bouquet of green apples, freshly baked bread, white peach and pastry cream, it's medium to full-bodied, taut and racy, with a lively spine of acidity, lovely purity and a long, searingly chalky finish. Lassaigne characterizes this as his "apéro" cuvée—modestly, as this makes for a decidedly serious apéritif. One of Champagne's most exciting producers is Emmanuel Lassaigne, an intelligent and thoughtful grower who works with the chalky south- and southeast-facing slope vineyards of Montgueux." -Robert Parker

"The nose of this blanc de blancs is appealingly ripe but not overly so, with a pleasant balance of apple, lemon peel and apricot touched with a gentle note of autolysis. The texture of the mousse is creamy, and the feel is supple and silky without any heaviness. The base wines are one-third each from 2017, 2018 and 2019. Grapes are blended from sources throughout the village and aged on the lees in tank and barrel for more than a year before tirage. Delicious."

Wine Spectator

WS 93
"A svelte version, offering sleek, well-knit flavors of mirabelle plum, star fruit and pickled ginger, and a delicate overtone of spring blossom and pastry dough set on the fine, lacy mousse. A spine of vibrant, citrusy acidity drives the mouthwatering finish."
