Paul Pernot is one of the largest landholders in Puligny-Montrachet, and along with their neighbors at Domaine Leflaive they have become synonymous with the finely etched, mineral driven Chardonnays of this famous village. But unlike Leflaive, their prices have barely risen over the past decade.

Paul Pernot founded the domaine in 1955 and he and sons have been expanding it ever since. They now have 19 hectares, but close to 80% of their fruit is sold to negociants like Drouhin. What they bottle themselves is some of their best parcels. Today it is Paul’s son Philippe and his granddaughter Alvina who are at the helm of this historic estate. The work is much the same as it has been for generations. The vineyards are farmed sustainably, with grasses in between the vines to promote biodiversity and sprays fastidiously avoided.

The winemaking is similarly straightforward. All the Chardonnay is fermented in barrels, racked twice (after malolactic fermentation and before bottling), and bottled with a light filtration. Every vintage these wines are some of the best values in what is increasingly a village that is only for serious collectors.
