What is this wine?
Domaine de la Chevalerie’s Bourgueil “Les Galichets” 2018 is a pure Cabernet Franc from one of the Loire Valley’s great family domaines, now in its 14th generation. The Caslot family farms biodynamically on the mid-slope gravel and clay-limestone soils of the Les Galichets vineyard, located near the village of Restigné. The wine is fermented with native yeasts in concrete vats and aged in large neutral oak barrels, resulting in a precise, terroir-driven expression of Bourgueil.

Why get this wine?
Domaine de la Chevalerie is a benchmark producer for traditional, ageworthy Loire reds. Les Galichets 2018 perfectly captures the warmth and generosity of the vintage while maintaining the freshness and aromatic lift that define great Cabernet Franc. It’s a wine of depth and balance—earthy, floral, and elegantly structured—at a remarkable value for its quality.

What does this wine taste like?
Elegant and savory, with aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, violet, and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied and silky, with ripe fruit, supple tannins, and a long, mineral finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Drink now through 2032. Decant for 30 minutes if young. Perfect with roast chicken, lentils, charcuterie, or mushroom dishes.

Over the past decade or two the best Cabernet Franc producers in the Loire Valley have finally been given the attention and accolades they deserve. Names like Bernard Baudry, Charles Joguet, Pierre & Catherine Breton and Olga Raffault are now known globally and can be found on many of the world’s best wine lists. And of course there is Clos Rougeard.

For some reason the Domaine de la Chevalerie is not always mentioned in the same company, but it should be! The Caslot family has been living and working at the Domaine since 1640 and for many years they have produced among the very best wines in the Bourgueil appellation.

Pierre Caslot was the patriarch who set the tone of quality for decades until his passing in 2014. In the 1990’s he began to eliminate the use of pesticides and herbicides, and when his children Stephanie and Emmanuel joined the team a few years later they began converting everything to organic and biodynamic farming. They were certified organic in 2008, and biodynamic in 2012.

Pierre was also one of the first in his region to begin isolating individual vineyards and terroirs and bottling them separately. His attention to the soil and the land and his gentle, hands off approach in the cellar resulted in wines that were both elegant and structured. They were also extremely long lived. His children have kept up this focus on terroir, elegance and structure and the wines continue to be world class examples of Cabernet Franc.

"A full and powerful style, the 2018 Les Galichets offers power. There's richness here from the warm season, but it's far from full-bodied. It has a firm tannic grip. This is impressive, but on tasting this time, the alcohol (14%) did show up on the finish, reflecting the hot vintage." -Rebecca Gibb
