What is this wine?
Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2023 is a benchmark Burgundy from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most respected estates. Founded in 1968 by Jacques Seysses, Domaine Dujac is now led by his sons Jeremy and Alec, along with Jeremy’s wife Diana Snowden Seysses. The domaine farms biodynamically and ferments all wines with whole clusters and native yeasts, crafting reds of both aromatic lift and structural depth. The Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru lies in Gevrey-Chambertin on shallow limestone and clay soils, producing Pinot Noir of perfumed richness and fine tannins.

Why get this wine?
Dujac’s Charmes-Chambertin is one of the purest, most graceful expressions of this Grand Cru — sensual and transparent, yet profound. The 2023 vintage in Burgundy produced wines of charm, clarity, and freshness, qualities that play perfectly to Dujac’s elegant style. For collectors, this is an essential wine that captures both the power of Gevrey and the finesse of Dujac’s meticulous touch.

What does this wine taste like?
Silky and complex, with layers of red cherry, raspberry, rose petal, and spice. The palate is supple yet precise, showing vibrant acidity, fine-grained tannins, and a long, mineral finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Drink 2028–2045. Decant if opened young to reveal its floral and textural nuance. Ideal with roast duck, game birds, or earthy mushroom dishes.

Even very casual consumers of Burgundy have likely heard of Domaine Dujac, considered one of the very best producers in Morey-Saint-Denis. This is a rather astounding fact given that the Domaine is only 50 years old, a blink in the eye given the region's winemaking history.

When Jacques Seysses purchased the estate of Marcel Graillet in 1967, it was in disrepair and had been selling fruit off in bulk for some years. In less then a decade he had invested heavily in the property and found customers for his domaine bottled wines. The Dujac name begin to be seen at top restaurants in France and beyond.

Fast forward 20 years and you have Jacques' sons, Alec and Jeremy, taking over the reigns of the now expanded Domaine, with holdings in Gevrey, Chambolle, Vosne, Nuits and Puligny. Today Jeremy and his wife Diana Snowden (herself from a prominent wine-making family in Napa) are largely responsible for the operations.

The winemaking has evolved. Jacques was famous for using 100% whole clusters and 100% new oak. Jeremy and Diana are the first to tell you that adaptation is key. The climate is changing dramatically in Burgundy, and every vintage presents new challenges. Stem use is between 20% and 100%, depending on the vintage and the vineyard. Same goes for oak use. On a visit there last spring Jeremy was excited to show us his concrete egg tanks that were aging the Puligny-Montrachets.

All of this is to say that this now storied Domaine is in very good hands as it heads into the future.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

"Note: from a total of .70 ha in both Charmes and Mazoyères. Light reduction is enough to push the fruit to the background. The palate impression of the medium-bodied flavors though is fresh and bright with a gorgeous, indeed silky, mouthfeel that contrasts markedly with the robust and borderline rustic finale that is very firmly structured. This is promising but be prepared to be at least moderately patient." -Allen Meadows

"The 2023 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very appealing bouquet, commendable purity of fruit and finely delineated hints of black cherry, raspberry and licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins. There's a beguiling balance and nuance here. This is a total step-up from the Combottes Premier Cru this year, with a long and quite sensual finish. Recommended." -Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 2023 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the more muscular, concentrated wines in the range, offering up aromas of cherries, dark berries, cassis bud and spices, followed by a full-bodied, deep and layered palate framed by ample reserves of sweet, powdery tannin. It's one 2023 that isn't so far removed from the style of its 2022 counterpart." -William Kelley
