What is this wine?

Domaine Michel Lafarge, based in Volnay, is one of Burgundy’s most revered traditional estates. Now under Frédéric and Chantal Lafarge, the domaine continues its long-standing commitment to biodynamic farming, hand harvesting, and classic low-intervention winemaking that emphasizes purity, texture, and terroir expression.
The Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Aigrots Rouge 2022 comes from a walled Premier Cru monopole vineyard on the southern edge of Beaune, adjacent to the white wine vines of the same name. The site’s limestone-rich soils and eastern exposure yield wines that combine Beaune’s natural generosity with Volnay-like finesse. Grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts, typically with a high proportion of whole clusters, and aged in mostly neutral oak barrels.

Why get this wine?

This is a singular expression of Beaune from one of the Côte de Beaune’s greatest domaines. The 2022 vintage produced ripe, supple fruit balanced by Lafarge’s hallmark lift and transparency. It’s an insider’s Burgundy—refined, energetic, and built to age gracefully.

What does this wine taste like?

Perfumed and elegant, with red cherry, raspberry, rose petal, and a touch of warm spice. The palate is silky and vibrant, showing fine tannins and a lingering, mineral-driven finish.

When should you drink this wine?

Enjoy after a brief decant if drinking young, or cellar 2026–2040 for full complexity. Excellent with roast poultry, duck, or mushroom dishes.

Lafarge is one of the great names in Volnay, some would say the greatest. His wines are sought out the world over, and we are always excited when our allocation arrives.

Lafarge’s home territory is Volnay, though he also has holdings in nearby Beaune and Meursault. This is an old estate that started bottling their wines in the early 1900s. Only Armand Rousseau, the DRC, and maybe two or three other growers have that kind of history.

The wines of Lafarge are magical. Despite being made in a decidedly old-school style—really no different than a generation or even two ago—they display incredible purity and not a hint of rusticity. It is the same kind of magic that Jacky Truchot was able to conjure. We only wish we could get more.

"As befits the elevated position of Aigrots, this is quite airy, cool and elegant with its array of both red and dark cherry, subtle floral nuances and a touch of wet stone character. The beautifully textured and tension filled middleweight flavors flash evident minerality on the lightly austere and balanced finish. This does though need to develop better depth so at least a few years of cellaring should prove beneficial. "

"The 2022 Beaune Clos des Aigrots 1er Cru, which was the last cuvée to be racked, has a bright nose with dark cherries, raspberry and light sous-bois aromas that will knit together during the rest of its élevage. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins, perhaps just a tad unsettled post-racking. Still, there is impressive concentration, backbone, and firm grip on the finish with a sapid aftertaste. Cellar this for 4-5 years to smooth down its edges." -Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Aigrots is pretty and fine-boned, offering up aromas of cherries, petals, orange zest and raw cocoa, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and lively palate. " -William Kelley

"The deeply-coloured wine from the old vines in the Lafarge parcel boasts a ripe plummy fruit in 2022, yet there is a saline mineral side and a hint of savoury, gamey complexity. This delicious wine has a nervy tension and the density and length to age nicely in the cellar. The grapes come from the three-quarters of a hectare planted relatively high on the slope – some are 70 years of age; they are destemmed and gently fermented to produce this exquisite wine.(CC)" -2024-01-01 00:00:00 -0800
