What is this wine?

Domaine Michel Lafarge, one of Burgundy’s most revered traditional estates, has been a cornerstone of Volnay since the 19th century. Under Frédéric and Chantal Lafarge, the domaine continues its legacy of biodynamic farming and classical, low-intervention winemaking: whole-cluster fermentations, indigenous yeasts, and aging in neutral oak.
The Volnay 1er Cru “Les Caillerets” 2022 comes from one of Volnay’s most distinguished Premier Cru sites, located on thin, rocky limestone soils that produce wines of striking perfume and finesse. Lafarge’s old vines here are deeply rooted in pure calcaire, yielding a wine that perfectly captures the domaine’s signature balance of delicacy and depth.

Why get this wine?

“Les Caillerets” is often considered the pinnacle of Volnay, prized for its ethereal elegance and silken texture. In the hands of the Lafarge family, it becomes a reference point for the appellation—an exemplar of Burgundy purity and precision. The 2022 vintage brings luminous fruit and seamless structure, making it both immediately expressive and built for long aging.

What does this wine taste like?

Perfumed and precise, with wild strawberry, red cherry, rose petal, and subtle spice. The palate is silky yet firm, showing crystalline fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a mineral finish of exceptional length and grace.

When should you drink this wine?

Drink 2028–2045. Decant for an hour if young. Superb with roast duck, squab, or dishes featuring truffles or morel mushrooms.

Lafarge is one of the great names in Volnay, some would say the greatest. His wines are sought out the world over, and we are always excited when our allocation arrives.

Lafarge’s home territory is Volnay, though he also has holdings in nearby Beaune and Meursault. This is an old estate that started bottling their wines in the early 1900s. Only Armand Rousseau, the DRC, and maybe two or three other growers have that kind of history.

The wines of Lafarge are magical. Despite being made in a decidedly old-school style—really no different than a generation or even two ago—they display incredible purity and not a hint of rusticity. It is the same kind of magic that Jacky Truchot was able to conjure. We only wish we could get more.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 91-93
"The 2022 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru, the vineyard that has been worked by horse and by hand since 2018, is very precise on the nose, mixing red and black fruit with hints of graphite and crushed stone. Impressive complexity here. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins and a fine bead of acidity. There’s a little more succulence towards the finish where it doesn't quite possess the complexity of Lafarge's top cuvées. Still, a mighty fine Volnay." -Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"Pure and fine-boned, the 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets wafts from the glass with scents of cherries, sweet red berries, toasted spices and subtle balsamic overtones. Medium-bodied, bright and precise, it's a delicate, perfumed wine that concludes with a mineral finish." -William Kelley
