Vincent Dureuil-Janthial’s Mercurey Rouge 2022 comes from a 0.33 ha east-facing parcel called Les Doues, situated high on the slope and farmed organically. The Pinot Noir vines thrive on limestone-rich soils and are treated with the same care as his premier cru Rully holdings.

Fermented with native yeasts, the wine aged 12 months in barrel (one-third new), then six months in tank. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, it offers lifted red fruit, spice, and a savory, mineral core.

Dureuil-Janthial is a star producer in the Côte Chalonnaise, a region of Burgundy that is often underappreciated. Just south of the Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise has the same soil composition as its more celebrated northern neighbor. However, mechanized farming and a more industrial approach to winemaking marked the region for much of recent history. Vincent-Dureuil-Janthial became an exception to that rule almost instantly when he took over his family’s winery in 1994 at the young age of 24. He went against the grain by converting his vineyards to organic farming and by eschewing the machines and instead opting for hand harvesting.

His hard work paid off and now he is known as an exceptional winemaker around the world for both his reds and his whites. Such a double-threat is a rarity in Burgundy. Jean-François Coche once gave them the ultimate endorsement when he said that if he spots Dureuil-Janthial on a wine list, he always buys their wine.

"The 2022 Mercurey Village is a blend of two parcels planted in 1965 and 2017. This has a little more complexity than the Rully Rouge on the nose, a mixture of red and black fruit, hints of potpourri and brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with white pepper-tinged red fruit, fine grip and a slightly savory finish. This is a charming, personality-filled Mercurey. Excellent." -Neal Martin
