Clos du Chapitre is a steep, east-facing premier cru in central Rully, planted in 1958 and farmed organically by Vincent Dureuil-Janthial. This 0.66 ha monopole sits on limestone-clay soils and produces structured, site-transparent Pinot Noir.

The 2022 was hand-harvested, cold macerated, and fermented with native yeasts. Aged 12 months in barrel (one-third new) and six in tank, it’s precise and savory, with red fruit, spice, and fine tannins.

Dureuil-Janthial is a star producer in the Côte Chalonnaise, a region of Burgundy that is often underappreciated. Just south of the Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise has the same soil composition as its more celebrated northern neighbor. However, mechanized farming and a more industrial approach to winemaking marked the region for much of recent history. Vincent-Dureuil-Janthial became an exception to that rule almost instantly when he took over his family’s winery in 1994 at the young age of 24. He went against the grain by converting his vineyards to organic farming and by eschewing the machines and instead opting for hand harvesting.

His hard work paid off and now he is known as an exceptional winemaker around the world for both his reds and his whites. Such a double-threat is a rarity in Burgundy. Jean-François Coche once gave them the ultimate endorsement when he said that if he spots Dureuil-Janthial on a wine list, he always buys their wine.

"From vines planted in 1965. A cool and exuberantly spicy dark berry-suffused nose is quite floral and in particular with violet hints. The sleek, intense and beautifully delineated medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality on the youthfully austere, punchy and well-balanced finale. This needs to add depth at least a few years of cellaring are recommended."

"The 2022 Rully Rouge Chapitre 1er Cru comes from a parcel adjacent to the whites. The nose has one of the best amongst the reds: raspberry, wild strawberry, touches of loam and sea spray. Wonderful definition. The palate is well-balanced, with fine tannins framing the intense black cherry and bilberry notes, quite peppery towards the finish. A bit of reduction is at play, but it will come through that. Excellent." -Neal Martin
