Beaujolais's top producers are now, officially, stars of the wine world. We're always excited to offer the latest releases from Lapierre, Foillard, Metras etc. And of course there are always exciting new producers like Yann Bertrand and Julie Balagny to rave about (their wines actually sell out even faster nowadays!).
But all this attention can distract from the simple pleasure of good, everyday, Beaujolais, wines for drinking and enjoying, and then drinking again. These gems cost much less than the $30+ of the big names, and more of them are available in America than ever before. Long gone are the days when "Beaujolais" meant some dusty bottle of last year's Dubueof Noveau, baking on a liquor store shelf.
Dominique Piron is a perfect example. He took over the family domaine in the early 1970's and has been producing honest, traditional, and delicious beaujolais ever since.
