From the producer: The goal of this cuvée is to obtain great taste sensations after a longer lees time than the rest of the range (about 10 years minimum). For this, we select grapes from our greatest terroirs, 1/3 come from Ay (Pinot Noir), and 2/3 come from Mesnil-sur-Oger and Avize (Chardonnay). This bottle only exists in the greatest Champagne vintages (currently 2008, then 2012, 2018, 2019 in the future...).

The Doyard family has roots in Champagne dating back to the 17th century and starting gaining recognition in the 70's for creating precise, mineral-etched champagnes. The domaine farms 10 ha of vineyards in Vertus and the Grand Cru villages of Le Mesnil, Cramant, Oger, Avize and Ay. The viticultural philosophy employed by the domaine is a ‘non-dogmatic’ approach to biodynamic farming with absolutely no herbicides or pesticides used. Most of the vineyards are worked by horse and yields are kept intentionally kept low, adding to the focused intensity that defines the house style.

In the cellar, all of the wines undergo very long lees aging—a minimum of 48 months, lending a vinous quality to the wines that have become the envy of Vertus. Every single decision made in the vineyard and cellar are geared toward making the most expressive, terroir focused Champagne possible.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 98
"Disgorged over a year ago with 0.8 grams per liter dosage, the 2008 Extra-Brut Grand Cru Les Lumières is a striking Champagne, unwinding in the glass with scents of pear, citrus oil, freshly baked bread, mandarin orange, almonds and buttery pastry. Full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's layered and muscular, with an immensely concentrated core of fruit, racy acids and a long, resonant finish. As I've written before, this cuvée is a blend of first-press juice: two-thirds Chardonnay from Mesnil-sur-Oger and one-third Pinot Noir from prime holdings in Aÿ." -Robert Parker
