Grape variety : Pinot Noir

Localisation :
Alphonse GROS bought this “cru” in 1860 and we have the monopoly of this appellation. The engraving at the top of the label dates back to the buying of this parcel, since my ancestors had sold this wine in bottles right from the beginning. Generation after generation, the label has been bearing the following names :
• GROS-GUENAUD,
• GROS-RENAUDOT,
• Louis GROS,
• Jean GROS
• and from the 1996 vintage, Michel GROS.
The wall of this triangular parcel borders the village in the east. A monumental portal stands in its middle. A small and very ancient house marks the north angle, on the Town Hall square. The "Clos des Réas" is located on the hillock that overhangs the small Réas valley. The geological stratum of the subsoil is a "Salmon conglomerate" on the Oligocene strata, with, at this place, a large quantity of limestone blocks alternated with marls. This soil profile, together with the slope, ensures excellent drainage. The marls give wine the silky character of tannins, the elegance of perfumes and the slight acidity that make it easy to taste from its youngest age. However, this impression of easiness is misleading: thanks to the almost perfect balance of this wine, it can age 10 to 15 years while preserving its fruity expression and its freshness.

The term "dynasty" is often used when discussing the Gros Family because of the enormous impact they've had on the recent history of winemaking in Burgundy. The Domaine Gros dates to the early 1800's, but after Jean Gros retired in the early 1990's it was split into 4 estates.

Jean's son Michel inherited the entirety of the Monopole 1er Cru vineyard "Clos Reas" and a few other parcels and has been steadily acquiring other vineyards. Today he farms around 18 hectares in Vosne-Romanée and the surrounding villages.

Michel is both an innovator and a sharp student of tradition. He isn't afraid to experiment a little in the cellar but his focus is always on producing wines of terroir and history. His style emphasizes rich fruit and elegance in balance with the power and longevity of Vosne and Nuits-St-Georges.

With 40 years of experience under his belt now Michel Gros has an excellent grasp of how to best transfer his terroir into the glass.

"a 2.12 ha monopole with vines averaging 40+ years of age. Slightly riper aromas of plum liqueur, violet, warm earth and plenty of spice elements lead to attractively textured flavors that display fine depth on the serious and youthfully austere finish that is borderline chewy. This promising built-to-age effort is clearly going to need extended keeping and I would suggest not touching a bottle for at least 7 to 8 years."

"The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Clos des Réas 1er Cru is the monopole of the Domaine where they recently conducted a geological study revealing much of the vineyard consists of marl with clay/limestone topsoil. It offers a perfumed, floral bouquet with redcurrant, cranberry, and strawberry fruit. It is a little strict at the moment. The medium-bodied palate is lightly spiced with fine tannins, nuanced, but it fans out with zeal toward the finish. It's the kind of Premier Cru that grows on you the more that you are acquainted. One of the best examples that I have tasted in recent years." -Vinous
