Julien Sunier came to winemaking through a series of coincidences and some seriously lucky breaks — making even more astonishing the fact that he is crafting some of the most ebullient, classical and delightful Cru Beaujolais on the market today. He grew up in landlocked Dijon — a veritable nerve center of French wine — to a hairstylist mother whose only connection to the famous vignerons of Burgundy was that she cut the hair of Christophe Roumier. As many parents do, his mother worried about the unclear career path ahead of young Julien, recently graduated from school and rather aimless; she set up a meeting between her son and Roumier, and the rest was history. Julien began work at Domaine Roumier (not a bad place to get your feet wet) and caught the wine bug tout de suite. After stints in New Zealand and California (surfing any moment he wasn't in the vines), and managing a large négociant in Beaujolais, Julien set down some real roots in the villages of Fleurie, Morgon and Régnié, where he was able to purchase three old-vine plots. He's been making his own wine for just over a decade, and his style is an enchanting, hard-to-pin-down blend of new and old. Like many new-school natural wine zealots, he has banished chemical fertilizers and herbicides, working his 7.2ha organically. Like his classical Beaujolais compatriots, his wines celebrate the unique characteristics of Gamay, as well as the distinct terroirs of Beaujolais' different villages.
