Guímaro’s 2019 Ribeira Sacra A Ponte is a red blend primarily of Mencía grown on steep slate and granite terraces in Galicia’s Ribeira Sacra region. The estate follows organic farming with hand harvesting and native yeast fermentation, aging in neutral oak and stainless steel.

This wine offers ripe red fruit, floral nuances, and mineral complexity with balanced acidity and fine tannins. It’s a refined, terroir-driven expression with excellent freshness and depth.

“Guimaro”, a Gallego word for rebel, could not be a more apt name for this great winery in the Amandi zone of the Ribeira Sacra. Twice before Guimaro rebelled against regional norms and are now releasing the fruits of their third rebellion.

The first rebellion was back in 1991, when Pedro Rodriguez transformed his parent's humble farm into a small estate producing D.O. wines available internationally. He was one of the true pioneers that pulled Ribeira Sacra out of its backwoods status.

The second rebellion occurred when Pedro met the great Raul Perez of Bierzo. Perez encouraged Pedro to work with old vines of indigenous varieties — especially Mencia — low yields and organic farming. Pedro starting making world-class wines sought out the world over. He became the star of the village of Amandi, and one of the crown jewels in José Pastor's amazing import portfolio of Spanish wines.

But recently Pedro has had some concerns as well as some new inspirations. As the climate continues to grow warmer he became concerned about his Mencia becoming over-ripe in his vineyards situated on Amandi’s incredibly steep, sun-facing vineyards. Like Pinot Noir and other delicate grapes, too much heat can lead to Mencia losing its focus, thus developing overripe flavors. The inspiration came from French wine, particularly the traditional method of making Cru Beaujolais using wooden casks with whole clusters.

"The single-vineyard 2019 A Ponte was produced with grapes from vines planted in 2010, a vineyard that used to belong to the Guímaro family a long time ago that they had to buy again and replant. It's a blend of 30% Mencía and similar parts of Caíño, Merenzao, Brancellao and Sousón. All the grapes fermented together with 100% full clusters in closed troncoconic vats with a 50-day total maceration time and always matured in 500-liter barrels. It has less color and is rather light and ethereal compared to its siblings. All the 2019s are more closed than the 2020s, and the wines are more austere and, in general, have more depth and balance, with lower alcohol. This has 13% and a subtle nose of wild flowers and herbs, nuanced and complex. This is superb for such young vines." -Luis Gutiérrez
