F.X. Pichler’s 2023 Riesling Ried Klostersatz comes from deep gravel soils near Dürnstein—one of Wachau’s oldest vineyard sites. Organically farmed and native fermented, it’s aged on fine lees in stainless steel for four months.

Dry and tightly structured, it shows citrus zest, white peach, and saline minerality. Bright and approachable now, with the depth to age gracefully over a decade.

F.X. Pichler has often been called the greatest winemaker in Austria and is certainly an icon.

His son Lucas Pichler has taken over the estate and continues the tradition of producing mouth-filling, complex wines from their ancient holdings in the Kellerberg and Loibenberg.

The wines can tend towards opulent and exotic but with time open up to new layers. The layers deepen and complicate more, the longer you can keep yourself from drinking it.

"The 2023 Riesling Klostersatz is Pichler’s only Riesling that is not on a slope. The poor Danubain gravels are too poor to support Grüner Veltliner. The juiciest mandarin shimmers with pear and stone fruit and a lovely tropical overtone, incredibly animating with the first sniff. The palate presents the full hit of juiciness promised on the nose with verve, ease and joyfulness. This just flows with freshness and fruit. The finish is all zestiness."
