What is this wine?
Marie-Lise & Thomas Batardière’s Chenin Blanc “Les Cocus” 2023 is a biodynamically farmed, single-vineyard wine from the Anjou region of the Loire Valley. The Batardières, based in Rablay-sur-Layon, are among the leading natural winegrowers of their generation, crafting deeply expressive Chenin Blancs from schist-rich soils. Les Cocus comes from a small parcel of old vines on shallow schist, fermented with native yeasts and aged on fine lees in used barrels, without fining or filtration.
Why get this wine?
Thomas Batardière has earned cult status for his luminous, textural Chenin Blancs that balance precision and energy. The 2023 Les Cocus exemplifies that style—vibrant, mineral, and full of tension, yet with remarkable depth and purity. It’s a thrilling, terroir-driven Loire white that rivals top Savennières or Montlouis in sophistication while remaining soulful and alive.
What does this wine taste like?
Electric and complex, with aromas of quince, lemon curd, and white flowers over a core of wet stone. The palate is taut yet layered, with citrus, honey, and saline minerality leading to a long, crystalline finish.
