Brunate is one of Barolo's most formidable crus, and Oddero's half-hectare parcel yields only 2,400 bottles of this powerhouse. Dark and intensely balsamic, with signatures of black cherry, tar, licorice, and violets, the 2021 opens with reticence but builds to a plush, velvety palate with remarkable sapidity and balanced acidity. From a vineyard planted sixty years ago at 300 meters with southeastern exposure—expect it to evolve beautifully over the next 15 to 20 years.

Oddero is one of the oldest and most esteemed estates in all of Barolo. They were one of the first producers to start bottling their wine, instead of selling it off in bulk as was the custom until the 20th century. And when brothers Luigi and Giacomo took charge in the 1950s and ‘60s they helped modernize the winery and increased the quality and the vineyard holdings, without losing sight of the family’s 200 plus year old traditions.

So it’s a bit of a mystery why it took so long for them to catch on in the U.S. I think it's likely due to the fact that they have always sold a good percentage of their production in Italy itself. They have long standing relationships with many of the country’s best restaurants and are well represented on all the top wine lists and at the best wine bars. Whenever I travel there I’m sure to enjoy several bottles of perfectly aged Oddero Baroli.

But the days of obscurity stateside have largely ended now, thanks to the work of importers Doug Polaner in New York and Oliver McCrum in California.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Barolo Brunate is another stellar wine in this range of magnificent 2021s from Oddero. Dark and intensely balsamic, this is an archetype of Brunate. Black cherry, blood orange, spice, menthol, spice and new leather open with reticence. Today, I find the 2021 rather compact. Then again, this is Brunate. Readers will want to give this a few years in the cellar at a minimum." -Antonio Galloni

"The Oddero 2021 Barolo Brunate comes from half a hectare of vines, and only 2,400 bottles were created. It is recognized by a dusty mineral note of crushed limestone or aspirin that appears quite prominent in this balanced vintage. It adds a dusty sensation to the bouquet that then transfers to the elegantly powdery tannins. I love the Brunate in this vintage, with its lasting sensations of dried mint and violet. I love its vertical force and that etched mineral quality that adds contouring and dimension. The Brunate ages in botte grande for 24 months." -Monica Larner
