Since 1981 Philippe Tessier has been quietly producing beautifully transparent wines from the 23 hectare domaine that his father founded in the early 1960's in the heart of Cheverny. The Tessiers have always farmed with the goal of a harmonious relationship with nature, and they've been organically certified for several decades. In the cellar they never added anything other than sulphur in small amounts where and when necessary. They use neutral barrels and do just what is needed to make what the vineyard offers.So why are they not on the front pages of every social media account devoted to natural wine? Because they are stylistically quiet, understated and clean. They are clear, precise reflections of terroir, not funky, animalistic standouts. But if you look closely you'll find them on many of the hippest Parisian wine bar lists or sprinkled among their louder brethren on the chalkboards of natural wine focused cafés from Brooklyn to the Mission. And if you have a Loire Valley wine lover around then Tessier is a must have.
