Marco di Bartoli was the first to make dry whites from Zibibbo here, and to do so he found a vineyard of 60 year old, albarello-trained vines that grow in organically farmed, mineral rich volcanic soil. Black rocks, as the name means. This wine is so expressive and delicious, I probably drank a whole case while I was there.

Left Marco de Bartoli

The di Bartoli estate is actually two wineries, the original family estate that Marco resurrected in Samperi on the western end of Sicily, and a newer one on the smaller island of Pantelleria. Samperi is in the heart of Marsala country while Pantelleria has long been known for passito dessert wines.
