Château Cantemerle, one of the standout estates of the Haut-Médoc, offers a beautiful expression of Bordeaux in its 2016 vintage. Known for its harmonious balance between power and finesse, this wine reflects the quality and consistency of the Médoc’s terroir. With a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a touch of Petit Verdot, Cantemerle's 2016 delivers both richness and elegance.

The wine opens with aromas of ripe dark berries—blackcurrant, plum—accented by a touch of cedar and tobacco, signaling the subtle oak influence. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, with firm tannins that have softened with age, providing a smooth yet structured texture. The wine’s vibrant acidity keeps it fresh, while the finish is long and elegant, with lingering notes of spice and earthy complexity.

Château Cantemerle 2016 is a wine that can be enjoyed now, but its aging potential is clear. Pair it with roasted meats, grilled steaks, or rich stews, or enjoy it alongside a selection of cheeses. Whether enjoyed in its youth or cellared for further development, this wine offers a true taste of Haut-Médoc’s ability to produce wines that are both accessible and age-worthy.

Cantemerle is one of the rare crus-classés to hail from Haut-Médoc – a 5th growth located just beyond AOC Margaux’s borders. Unsurprisingly, it drinks quite a bit like a Margaux; it’s Cabernet-based (yet softer than a Pauillac or Saint-Estephe), and with age it develops an expressive perfume, with good complexity and a slightly ‘sauvage’ quality to its fruit.

But, because it’s not a true Margaux, Cantemerle is perennially undervalued on the market, which makes it a bit of an “insider’s” wine. We love that. We also love how, despite its ability to age, Cantemerle tends to be a little softer and more approachable than it’s cru classé peers.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 92
"The 2016 Cantemerle has developed beautifully with élevage. Pliant, silky and exceptionally balanced, the 2016 has the pedigree and complexity to allow for a number of years of very fine drinking. Moreover, the 2016 delivers serious flavor intensity without being at all heavy. Smoke, iron and cedar add character to a Haut-Médoc that has a lot to offer." -Vinous

Jancis Robinson

"Deep crimson with purple rim. Intense aroma that is both ripe, sweet damson and floral. Really aromatic. Then rounded and sweet on the palate. Not complex but generous and full of flavour."

Decanter

"This beautiful château is one of the first major properties encountered heading north on the Route des Châteaux. Situated in a woodland setting, this 94-hectare estate is situated on sand and gravel soils, and produces fresh, early-drinking and great value wines. Medium-bodied with some graphite, mineral notes adding to the ripe blackberry fruit. 12 months ageing in oak, 40% new."

Wine Enthusiast

"Well-integrated tannins give this wine a rich, velvet character that is underlined by the blackberry fruits. The aftertaste is dense, concentrated and rich."
