Like Palmer and Calon-Segur, La Lagune was ranked a 3rd growth in the Bordeaux classification of 1855. Yet La Lagune costs a good deal less than either of those châteaux – and it remains one of the most affordable cru classés on the market. Why? Name recognition probably has something to do with it: La Lagune sits just beyond the boundaries of Margaux, so it belongs instead to the less-prestigious Haut-Médoc appellation. Were Margaux's boundaries drawn a little further south, the wine would surely not be the great value that it is today.
