Since the 1950's Mayacamas Vineyards has made a name for themselves in being one of the best producers of California Cabernet - not a small feat! The winery takes a traditional and almost old world approach to all of their wines, preserving the identity and terroir of their mountain fruit (mostly from Mt. Veeder), in order to create wines that are meant to last. Older expressions of their wines are compelling and truly complex, a treat for those who have patience!

"This year's library release is the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, which still retains a vibrant dark garnet hue in the glass. On the nose, it offers up notes of dusty earth, slightly attenuated cassis and pie cherries, plus some attractive herbal nuances. It's medium-bodied and streamlined in shape on the palate, weighing in at just 13.25% alcohol, with a tart, lingering finish and just a dusting of fine tannins. It's an old-school style, very distinct from the ripe, plush wines that have largely taken over Napa Valley today, but it should still have plenty of fans." -Robert Parker

"Deep garnet, enticing slightly herbaceous aroma – scented – alongside rocky dark fruit and graphite. Super-fresh and still that herbaceous quality but also sweet red cherry and cassis leaf, and some black-olive savoury notes. Really complex and still with a firm but not aggressive structure and approachable now. Bone dry and just a little chalky in texture, like layers of paper, elegant and refined."

"A vintage that shows the restrained and sometimes hidden power of Mount Veeder Cabernet. The nose is initially reticent and understated, giving off subtle notes of blackberry and espresso, but after time in the glass it opens up to reveal a vibrant, gritty core. Beautiful and classically Mayacamas in style, but built to go the distance. You can drink it now, but best left for at least another five years."
