Philipponnat is a champagne house that needs little introduction. Synonymous with Clos des Goisses, which is known for being Champagne's only great single vineyard site until Krug's Clos du Mesnil came along in 1979. Since Charles Philipponnat took the helm in 1999, he has been responsible for a philosophical rebirth of his family's legacy dating 600 years back. And now the winery's current portfolio is one of the finest in Champagne.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 91
"The 2018 Extra-Brut Blanc de Noirs is an understated wine, as so many Champagnes are in 2018. This is an especially brisk, floral style of Blanc de Noirs, the result of a choice of villages (Avenay-Val-d’Or, Mareuil, Mailly, Vertus, Écueil), the decision to partially block the malolactic fermentation and dosage that is on the low side. Grapefruit, white flowers, mint, chalk and dried herbs are all finely cut." -Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

RP 93
"Crafted entirely from Pinot Noir sourced mainly from the commune of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and complemented with Aveney, Mailly, Ecueil and Vertus, the 2018 Extra-Brut Blanc de Noirs offers up a dense, complex bouquet of pear, white peach, spices, walnuts, tangerine and red berries. Medium to full-bodied, chiseled and tense, it's broad and seamless with bright acids and a crystalline texture leading to a delicate, mouthwatering, saline finish. Disgorged in June 2023 with 4.5 grams per liter dosage, it has a pH of three." -Yohan Castaing

Wine Spectator

WS 94
"A well-tailored Champagne, displaying a refined, satinlike mousse and deftly honed acidity. Offers a lovely range of black currant, salted Marcona almond, tangerine peel and candied ginger flavors underscored by chalky minerality that lingers on the finish."

Wine Enthusiast

WE 94
"From Premier and Grand Cru vineyards, this Champagne has a rich character with Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims. With its aroma hinting at red fruits and its rich texture, this ripe wine could do with more aging."
