Our ongoing quest to bring you affordable artisanal wines from the Golden State continues.
Why is that sometimes a challenge? Well, California's stratospheric land prices are a big reason. With huge costs to cover only cheap wines made on a huge, industrial scale will cut it. And many winemakers just can't run any risks in the vineyard or in the winery. So they let the fruit hang til sugar overwhelms any sense of terroir or they manipulate in the cellar to ensure a consistent product with mass appeal, even if that means losing individuality, vintage specificity-- losing so much of what makes wine more than a mere beverage!
Amy Atwood took this as a call to action. Amy imports some of the best small production, naturally made wines from around the world--and has for ages. But just a few years back she founded the Oeno (ee-no) winery as a way to bring like-minded winemakers together.
The wines are made to her exacting specifications. They start with pristine fruit from great vineyards and use only native yeasts for fermentation, and only neutral oak is employed.
Whether Chardonnay, Pinot Noir or Cabernet, the wines are pure and true expressions of their terroir. Most importantly they are a joy to drink!
