When we were introduced to Ryan Pace and Natalie Siddique, the couple who started Outward, we were charmed. They buzz with the kind of innocent excitement found in those who both enjoy life, and ceaselessly question it.
Their wines are nearly all single vineyard bottlings, from sites scattered around California's central coast. These are cold, coastal sites, many on rare limestone soils, with lots of older vineyards. Farming is as carefully as possible, some certified organic or biodynamic.
But even the greatest terroir only gets you so far. The deft touch on each of these wines is wondrous to behold, like a magic trick, where something so difficult looks effortless. But no magic is used in the winemaking, just a traditional hands-off approach.
