Poggio Antico is an example of how the wine world is getting so much better these days – despite the numerous challenges, like inflation and global warming.
This Tuscan winery has excellent terroir: clay-rich, deep vineyard sites at the very highest altitudes in the center of the Montalcino DOC. But for a long time, they followed the trends of the day, and they covered up their beautiful raw material with too much oak using shiny new barrels.
Things have changed. Even before new ownership, Poggio Antico was improving throughout the 2010s. Then, in 2017, a Belgian entrepreneur took over the domaine and injected a ton of money – and a lot of style. These resources went to a geologic study of the terroir, reducing yields, and improving wine-making facilities to improve precision and reduce environmental impact. He dumped the chocolate-tasting Brunello's of yesteryear and adopted a far more traditional, terroir-driven approach.
Today, Poggio Antico is producing fabulous wines that find that perfect point of intersection where “crowd pleasing” meets “thoroughly Tuscan”. The Rosso is Brunello made from young vines and a shorter aging in barrel.
