The 2020 vintage of Ballot-Millot's Genevrières—widely considered one of Burgundy's finest recent vintages. Charles Ballot's approach remains consistent: organic farming, lunar-cycle cellar work, maximum 25% new oak, no bâtonnage, 12 months in barrel followed by six months in tank. Genevrières sits mid-slope in the southern part of Meursault at 230–360 meters, on limestone and clay soils. Where the 2019 showed warmth with surprising freshness, the 2020 offers lovely acidity and a more seamless, elegant expression of the same vineyard.

Ballot-Millot et Fils is an outstanding domaine in Meursault with phenomenal holdings in the village's top crus, Charles Ballot is producing precise, tensile, racy yet exuberant wines. There is very little new oak used. These are modern white Burgundies, they are transparent and reflect their respective terroirs.

Charles has been in charge of the farming, winemaking, and cellar work since 2001. His grandparents started the domaine, and he inherited additional vines from his mother, who is related to the Lochardet-Dancer family. He farms according to lutte raisonnée — he works as organically as he can without sacrificing the crop. New oak is limited to 15% for village wines and up to 25% for the premier crus. The wines are bottled after about 16 months in barrel.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 94
"The 2020 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru leans towards a more reductive style on the nose with grilled walnut and light wax resin scents, gaining complexity as it unfurls in the glass. It doesn't possess the energy of Comte Lafon's Genevrières. The palate is forward and rich on the entry, slightly honeyed in texture with lower acidity, powerful and weighty in the mouth. After 20 minutes in the glass, it really delivers the complexity one expects from this climat. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting." -Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"Following hard on the heels of the Charmes, the 2020 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières is also excellent, delivering aromas of pear, green apple, freshly baked bread, almonds and mint, framed by light reduction. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it's suave and elegant, with excellent depth at the core, tangy acids and a long, precise finish." -William Kelley
