The 2021 vintage is shaping up to be a standout: cooler and more linear than the riper years that came before it, giving the wine bright red cherry, rose petal, and sweet fennel on the nose, with fine tannins and that signature Barbaresco lift. There’s grip, but it’s polished; there’s depth, but it’s never heavy.

This isn’t a Riserva bottling—but that’s part of the appeal. It’s approachable earlier, versatile at the table, and sourced from the same top cru sites that go into the Riservas in top years. In 2021, those components shine with extra clarity and elegance.

Left Produttori del Barbaresco

The Produttori is Barbaresco’s benchmark producer. A huge share of the village’s best farmers, representing virtually all of its best terroirs, bring their fruit to the co-op. It is hard to be admitted to the co-op. There is a waiting list; only a few make it.

Once you are in, the rules are strict. You don't get to hold back any wine for your own labels. This isn't a region where growers ship off their second best to the co-op and put their pride and joy in their own luxury bottles. You have to meet strict quality controls, of course. The Produttori is only devoted to quality-minded farmers with incredible terroir giving their all.

The winemaking is likewise next level. Aldo Vacca, the co-op’s general manager, is one of the wine world’s greatest artists. If you ever have the opportunity to meet and taste with him, take it; he is also one of the wine world’s great communicators.

"This wine gives us our first taste of the epic 2021 vintage from a producer as prolific as Produttori del Barbaresco. Bottled in April 2024, this vintage shows the immense power and complexity that likens it to 2016, another year for collectors. The 2021 Barbaresco offers medium-rich density that is transmitted both to the wine's appearance and its mouthfeel. There is black fruit, spice and a touch of nutmeg. However, the wine maintains its youthful tension and energy throughout. The tannins are chalky, fine and void of any bitterness. This is a classical expression of Nebbiolo that gives us good reason to be excited for the upcoming 2021 Barbaresco Riservas." -Monica Larner
