Produttori del Barbaresco’s 2020 Barbaresco Ovello Riserva comes from a single vineyard in the famed Ovello cru, known for its clay and limestone soils. This iconic cooperative produces this Riserva with strict selection from vines averaging 30+ years, hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts. Aging takes place for at least 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks followed by bottle aging.

The wine shows classic Nebbiolo aromas of cherry, rose, and tar, with firm tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, structured finish. Ovello’s power and elegance shine through in this age-worthy Barbaresco Riserva.

Left Produttori del Barbaresco

The Produttori is Barbaresco’s benchmark producer. A huge share of the village’s best farmers, representing virtually all of its best terroirs, bring their fruit to the co-op. It is hard to be admitted to the co-op. There is a waiting list; only a few make it.

Once you are in, the rules are strict. You don't get to hold back any wine for your own labels. This isn't a region where growers ship off their second best to the co-op and put their pride and joy in their own luxury bottles. You have to meet strict quality controls, of course. The Produttori is only devoted to quality-minded farmers with incredible terroir giving their all.

The winemaking is likewise next level. Aldo Vacca, the co-op’s general manager, is one of the wine world’s greatest artists. If you ever have the opportunity to meet and taste with him, take it; he is also one of the wine world’s great communicators.

"The Ovello vineyard has some northern exposures and generally represents a cooler growing site. You can expect intense fruit flavors and more prominent tannins as a result. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello fits the bill. Vine growth starts much later and usually lasts longer to produce dark intensity and bold aromas in the wines. In the cold years, the tannins can be aggressive, but in the hot years like 2020, they show better balance. "Ovello is by far the most important cru of the Produttori del Barbaresco. Eleven members cultivate 20 hectares on both sides of the ridge, facing south-east and south-west. The cold northerly winds and the calcareous, clayey soils give the wine a powerful, highly structured expression. The 2020 remains true to its terroir, but harnesses some of this power to create a harmonious, albeit robust, whole. Grilled herbs, savoury dark earth and dense, ripe dark cherries are held together by well-integrated, chalky tannins. This is a wine for the cellar."
