From the producer:

Area : 0,63 ha
Age of the vines : 40 years old
Average annual production : 4 000 bottles
Grape variety : Pinot Noir

Localisation :
This parcel is located next to the GROS family parcel of RICHEBOURG in the north. The draining capacity of the place may explain its name: the natural vegetation would be quickly "burned" during summer because of the dryness of the soil. The soil is very stony on a 30 to 35cm thickness, and the subsoil is made of hard limestone (similar to Prémeaux stones). This wine offers a great minerality; it is similar to Richebourg from which it is separated only by a 3m-wide lane. But the soil, which is not as thick as the Richebourg's, brings more softness to the tannins and makes it more rapidly accessible.

The term "dynasty" is often used when discussing the Gros Family because of the enormous impact they've had on the recent history of winemaking in Burgundy. The Domaine Gros dates to the early 1800's, but after Jean Gros retired in the early 1990's it was split into 4 estates.

Jean's son Michel inherited the entirety of the Monopole 1er Cru vineyard "Clos Reas" and a few other parcels and has been steadily acquiring other vineyards. Today he farms around 18 hectares in Vosne-Romanée and the surrounding villages.

Michel is both an innovator and a sharp student of tradition. He isn't afraid to experiment a little in the cellar but his focus is always on producing wines of terroir and history. His style emphasizes rich fruit and elegance in balance with the power and longevity of Vosne and Nuits-St-Georges.

With 40 years of experience under his belt now Michel Gros has an excellent grasp of how to best transfer his terroir into the glass.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

"35+ year old vines that abut their parcel of Richebourg in Verroilles. An admirably discreet dollop of wood is present on the spicier broad-ranging nose of red and black pinot fruit, plum and exotic tea scents. The utterly delicious and seductively textured medium weight flavors are not as concentrated but they are finer, all wrapped in a more obviously mineral-driven, robust and impressively powerful finish. Patience absolutely recommended."

"The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru comes from a parcel just next to their new plot in Richebourg. I gave this three or four minutes to open in the glass. Eventually, it offers enticing scents of redcurrant jam, white-tipped strawberries, and dried white flowers. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a "sexy" opening of confit red fruit, maybe a little too sweet for my liking, with hints of fig and marmalade towards the finish. Yet it has charm and feels more approachable than some of its peers. Very fine, but I might have picked this a day earlier, hence my prudent score." -Vinous
