What is this wine?
Peter Lauer “Senior” Riesling Ayler Fass 6 2023 is a dry-tasting Riesling from the Saar, a cool subregion of Germany’s Mosel Valley. Florian Lauer, one of Germany’s most respected winemakers, farms steep, slate-rich vineyards around the village of Ayl using organic methods and minimal intervention. “Fass 6,” labeled Senior, comes from old vines in the Kupp vineyard and is vinified with native yeasts in traditional large oak casks. Despite its designation as a village-level wine, it rivals many top Grosses Gewächs bottlings in character and precision.

Why get this wine?
“Senior” is a cult classic — the quintessential Saar Riesling that captures Lauer’s signature balance of depth, minerality, and vibrant acidity. The 2023 vintage is especially pure and expressive, showing crystalline fruit and tension. It’s an extraordinary value for a wine with such pedigree, perfect for both casual enjoyment and serious cellaring.

What does this wine taste like?
Dry-tasting and finely etched, with aromas of white peach, green apple, and lime zest. The palate is taut and stony, lifted by electric acidity and a long, saline finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Drink now through 2035. Serve well-chilled with sushi, shellfish, or goat cheese. It also ages beautifully, gaining honeyed complexity over time.

The Saar is our kind of region: cold and mineral-rich but with sun that makes Rieslings as succulent as they are perfectly seasoned with salt and racy acidity.

Peter Lauer makes some of our very favorite Saar wines. It's a bit hard to pin down exactly how Peter Lauer fits into today's Riesling zeitgeist. He's best known for his forward-leaning dry wines.

But he's not just a trippy natural grower. He's a neighbor of the great Egon Müller, and while their wines are oceans apart they share so many affinities, starting with a love for German tradition, terroir-specificity, and brilliance in Riesling. The Lauer wines are often described as drier, which is true as far as it goes; but even his driest wines have fruit and their own sort of decadence. They certainly have the Saar purity we love.

Probably, we just have to accept that there are multiple ways to express the greatness of the Saar.
