Ehren Jordan of Failla might be the man most responsible for this current exemplary state of New California wine. He spent 2 years in the Rhone Valley during the very terrible 92 and 93 vintages, then made the powerful wines at Turley. These experiences gave him the insight into maximizing ripeness, in either direction, under challenging conditions. We spent an afternoon at the Failla winery and tasting room in Napa. It'sa sprawling facility built into the hillside, perfect for weathering the crazy fires the valley has been forced to become accustomed to. The tasting room walls are lined with empty bottles of Europe's finest wines, a testament to the type of wines that Ehren strives, and often succeeds in making. His estate vineyards are in the Fort Ross Seaview area, a cool site along the Pacific ocean. It is planted with a complex variety of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones but he makes wine as far north as the Willamette from a quite a few different grape varieties. These are some of the most classic, yet modern for California wines we've had the pleasure to taste.
