Ehren Jordan of Failla might be the man most responsible for this current exemplary state of New California wine. He spent 2 years in the Rhone Valley during the very terrible 92 and 93 vintages, then made the powerful wines at Turley. These experiences gave him the insight into maximizing ripeness, in either direction, under challenging conditions.

We spent an afternoon at the Failla winery and tasting room in Napa. It's

a sprawling facility built into the hillside, perfect for weathering the crazy fires the valley has been forced to become accustomed to. The tasting room walls are lined with empty bottles of Europe's finest wines, a testament to the type of wines that Ehren strives, and often succeeds in making.

His estate vineyards are in the Fort Ross Seaview area, a cool site along the Pacific ocean. It is planted with a complex variety of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones but he makes wine as far north as the Willamette from a quite a few different grape varieties. These are some of the most classic, yet modern for California wines we've had the pleasure to taste.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 92
"The 2023 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a fabulous introduction to this range. Black cherry, licorice, cloves, lavender and a kiss of sweet oak bring out the darker side of Pinot Noir. The 2023 is fleshy, bold and absolutely delicious." -Antonio Galloni

Decanter

D 93
"The gateway to Failla’s style, and the one you’ll spot on the most wine lists and shelves, this Pinot is all about approachability, both in style and price. At around $36 retail, it’s hard to find a better deal on the Sonoma Coast. The 2023 leans more into vibrant fruit than usual, with fresh florals and subtle baking spices. About 40% whole cluster, thanks to the long, steady growing season, adds a gentle savoury grip. Crafted to shine around many tables, it delivers broad appeal without sacrificing nuance."

Wine Spectator

WS 93
"This is suave, with a mulled edge to its raspberry, damson plum and blood orange notes, which sparkle with savory and rose hip details. Finishes with light-handed echoes of sandalwood and sous-bois."
