Silver Oak Cellars is now almost as famous as the Napa Valley itself, indeed you could say they "grew up" together. Founded in 1972 by Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan, they chose to focus on a single varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet wasn't the 800lb gorilla of Napa Valley that it is today, but after their first vintage sold out quickly at the astronomical price of $6 a bottle (most Napa Cabs cost less than $3!) they knew they were on to something. On pricing alone, you could say this was one of Napa’s first ‘cult’ wines. It developed a cult-like following for sure, but without the feeling of exclusivity that many of the so called cult wineries cultivate today. Silver Oak is an iconic wine meant to be shared with everyone.A consistent style from the beginning, the wines are generous, concentrated and lushly balanced by Silver Oaks’ classic structure, acidity and oak spice. These attributes are enhanced with time as the wine's natural herbaceous qualities and dark savory character start to mingle with its generous fruit. Those of us lucky to have tried bottles from the 1980's and '90's know just how well they age.
