What is this wine?
Scions of Sinai is the project of Bernhard Bredell, who works old, dry-farmed bush vines on the Helderberg in Stellenbosch. He farms organically, with minimal intervention in the cellar, aiming for wines of purity and terroir. Feniks is his Pinotage, sourced from a single vineyard of old vines planted on decomposed granite. Bredell makes it in a lighter, fresher style than the heavy, oaky Pinotages of the past, showcasing the grape’s finesse and unique identity. The 2024 vintage produced balanced, energetic reds with excellent fruit clarity.
Why get this wine?
Pinotage can be divisive, but in the hands of a thoughtful grower like Bredell, it shows a completely different side: fragrant, refined, and expressive. Feniks is one of South Africa’s most exciting new-wave Pinotages, proving the variety can produce elegant, world-class wines. With tiny production, it’s a rare and distinctive find.
What does this wine taste like?
Juicy red cherry and plum with hints of fynbos herbs, spice, and earthy minerality. Medium-bodied, fresh, and silky, with fine tannins and a savory finish.
