Located in the Mountains of Valencia, Alto Turia, in the village of Baldovar (at 923 meters altitude, hence the name) the wine of Baldovar 923 couldn't be more different than what the region is known for. Working exclusively with indigenous varieties planted in limestone rich soils, these cold climate wines are all about morality and acidity. Founded in 2016, the wines are are produced in the old co-operative building which had been shuttered for 10 years. Unlike the gently sloping plains where most Valencian wines are grown, Baldovar's vineyards are high up in the mountain. High altitude and cold with very little water their 20 to 80-year-old organically/biodynamically farmed vines produce tiny amounts of exceptional fruit. In the winery the goal is to amplify and purely display their exceptional terroir. This means using 500L French oak barrels, traditional Spanish clay tinajas or stainless steel. Nothing is ever added or subtracted and winemaking is very gentle with no punchdowns or lees stirring. The results are outstanding.Spain never seems to stop surprising us. Envinate & Raul Perez are just a couple of examples of producers that no one had heard of a few years ago and are now darlings of the wine world. Just like these two, the folks at Baldovar 923 are producing amongst the world's most terroir driven wines and in the process lifting the fortunes and reputation of this maligned region. They have tapped into their home region unbridled potential and we can't wait to taste what comes next.
