From the importer: Camino del Pilar comes from a vineyard of Albillo located in the villages of Cadalso de los Vidrios. Inspired by Jerez and the Jura, Dani and Fer believe that Albillo is an ideal variety for biological aging, and the 2018 Camino del Pilar is their first commercial release proving their theory. The interaction between Albillo and the flor results in a more linear, mineral, and spicy expression of Albillo. Because they were unable to take delivery of a Manzanilla cask in time for aging their first vintage, 2018 was aged first in demijohn before being transferred to cask.

Over the past 15 years, Daniel Landi and Fernando García, the pair behind Comando G, have practically become joint mayors of the Sierra de Gredos.

The vineyards of the Sierra de Gredos — a mountain range an hour or so outside of Madrid — laid virtually abandoned up until quite recently. The steep slopes and rocky terrain are too hard, and too time consuming, to work and be profitable. And though wine production was valued during Franco's rule, the name of the game was high yields and easily made wines, which just isn't what you find here. So young people moved away, and eventually, even those who stuck it out found themselves simply too old to do such backbreaking labor.

It's only in the past couple of decades that winemaking has reverted to an art form rather than an industry. Daniel and Fernando are among a small cohort of winemakers looking to capitalize on the region’s unique terroir. After all, mountainous regions (think of the Northern Rhône and basically all of Northern Italy, for instance) produce some of the most thought-provoking and awe-inspiring wines out there, and granite soils (again, the N. Rhône, plus Beaujolais and the western Loire) impart an inimitable savory minerality. Coupled with impeccable farming, and a deft hand in the cellars, and Comando G’s wines simply knock it out of the park.

Daniel and Fernando focus on just one grape, Grenache, which they turn into powerful yet ethereal wines. Inspired by the French greats of Grenache — namely Château Rayas and Domaine Gramenon — Comando G's wines are featherweight in body but offer up fine red fruit, stony minerality and a wisp of tannic structure that combine to make a wine of pure delight.
