Guímaro’s Mundín 2020 is a single-vineyard red from granite soils in the Miño zone of Ribeira Sacra. The 60-year-old vines are mostly Mencía, co-planted with local varieties and farmed organically.

Fermented with native yeasts and partial whole clusters, it’s aged 18 months in large oak foudre. A savory, structured expression with spice, red fruit, and granite-driven lift.

“Guimaro”, a Gallego word for rebel, could not be a more apt name for this great winery in the Amandi zone of the Ribeira Sacra. Twice before Guimaro rebelled against regional norms and are now releasing the fruits of their third rebellion.

The first rebellion was back in 1991, when Pedro Rodriguez transformed his parent's humble farm into a small estate producing D.O. wines available internationally. He was one of the true pioneers that pulled Ribeira Sacra out of its backwoods status.

The second rebellion occurred when Pedro met the great Raul Perez of Bierzo. Perez encouraged Pedro to work with old vines of indigenous varieties — especially Mencia — low yields and organic farming. Pedro starting making world-class wines sought out the world over. He became the star of the village of Amandi, and one of the crown jewels in José Pastor's amazing import portfolio of Spanish wines.

But recently Pedro has had some concerns as well as some new inspirations. As the climate continues to grow warmer he became concerned about his Mencia becoming over-ripe in his vineyards situated on Amandi’s incredibly steep, sun-facing vineyards. Like Pinot Noir and other delicate grapes, too much heat can lead to Mencia losing its focus, thus developing overripe flavors. The inspiration came from French wine, particularly the traditional method of making Cru Beaujolais using wooden casks with whole clusters.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2020 Guímaro Mundín is a blend of 80% Mencía, 20% Garnacha, and Grau Negro from Amandi. It fermented with one-third whole clusters and aged for 18 months in foudres. The vintage and aging brought an exotic touch to the 2020, with hints of volatile acidity, damp earth, herbs, and dried flowers. Taut and vibrant, the wine balances its elevated acidity with a marked expression, while fruit plays a secondary role." -Joaquín Hidalgo

"There are two new reds from 2020 to compare the character of the wines from the Sil and the ones from the Miño. The one from the Miño is the 2020 Mundín, which is not slate, but granite. The wine was produced the same way as the San Pedro, fermented in oak vats with 40% full clusters and matured in a 3,000-liter oak foudre for 18 months. It has a little less alcohol and more freshness, and it feels a little lighter and not as showy but with great balance and subtleness. 3,500 bottles were produced. It was bottled in November 2022." -Luis Gutiérrez
