Merfy, Massif de Saint-Thierry

Chardonnay & Pinot Noir

FROM THE PRODUCER WEBSITE:

"Wines from Les Couarres open up over time. These are certainly the wines that require the most rigour when overseeing their maturation. Their delicate and sticky 'clay' texture means that rapid oxygen uptake must be avoided as much as possible during the aging process. Wines from Les Couarres are marked by a spherical "stickiness" on the palate, followed by freshness with medium acidity throughout the finish. The differences between the tufa part and the clay part principally concern an environment that is for stony for one (tufa), and cooler and tauter for the other (clay).

Exposure / South, gentle slope.

The Les Couarres vineyard is situated in the centre of the Merfy terroir, in the least well-draining area of the village. There are two types of subsoil in this plot: Tufa and Clay For these two plots, our labour is more or less the same, with greater useful reserves than the neighbouring plots, and an ability to maintain a level of moisture that avoids water deficiencies for the vines planted in this lieu-dit. While many of the soils in the village dry quickly and allow ploughing soon after the rains, the lieu-dit Les Couarres requires patience. Due to this fact, as well as the plot's topography, these vines are the most susceptible to frost. The yields from this plot are the most generous on the estate and often have to be limited by extensive de-budding and the removal of every second shoot."

After a stage with Antoine Selosse, Alexandre Chartogne returned to the family estate and turned it upside down. He spent years experimenting and tinkering with every aspect of Champagne making from vine management to vessels. He's landed back where he says his ancestors started: in the vineyards, growing perfect fruit and aging in neutral oak.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 93
"Derived from the 2017 vintage and disgorged in July 2021 with around four grams per liter dosage, Chartogne's NV Extra-Brut Les Couarres unfurls in the glass with aromas of pear, orange oil and tangerine mingled with nuances of fresh mint, dried fruits, walnuts and spices. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and enveloping, it's rich and fleshy, with a charming, expressive personality and fine depth at the core, as well as suggestions of the fragility that often mark the wines of this challenging vintage. I suspect this is one release that will be best approached on the young side, as it has a lot to offer out of the gates." -Robert Parker
