According to legend, the recipe dates to 1745, when Bonnie Prince Charlie gave it to Captain John MacKinnon of Clan MacKinnon in return for sanctuary on the Isle of Skye after the Battle of Culloden. In the 1870s, James Ross began selling it from his hotel on Skye, trademarking it in 1893. The name comes from the Scots Gaelic 'an dram buidheach'—'the drink that satisfies.' A blend of aged Scotch whisky, heather honey, herbs, and spices including saffron, anise, and nutmeg. Now produced by William Grant & Sons since their 2014 acquisition. Essential for the Rusty Nail.
