What is this wine?
Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat, based in Vosne-Romanée and now run by Charles Van Canneyt, is one of Burgundy’s most admired domaines, producing refined, terroir-transparent wines from top Côte de Nuits vineyards. Les Charmes is a premier cru vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny, prized for its silken texture and perfumed character. The 2017 vintage produced wines of elegance and balance, with lifted aromatics and supple tannins, making it one of the most accessible recent vintages in Burgundy.

Why get this wine?
Hudelot-Noëllat combines the pedigree of great Côte de Nuits terroir with a winemaking style that emphasizes finesse over power. Les Charmes is among Chambolle’s most seductive vineyards, and in 2017 it delivers a wine that is both immediately charming and capable of graceful aging. For collectors, this is a rare and highly desirable premier cru.

What does this wine taste like?
Red cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry with notes of rose petal, spice, and chalky minerality. Silky and medium-bodied, with fine tannins, lively acidity, and a long, floral finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Best from 2024–2035. Decant young bottles to release aromatics. Excellent with roast duck, squab, or truffle pasta.

Burgundy domaines are reinvigorated, even reborn, when a new generation joins a venerable establishment. When Alain Hudelot-Noellat retired in 2008 his grandson Charles Van Canneyt took over the reins; since then Hudelot-Noellat has just gotten better and better. The wine quality, which was always very good, has risen dramatically. Like many of the new generation of Burgundian winemakers, Charles focuses on meticulous grape farming and limiting yield in the vineyards - quantities are lower but the quality is greatly improved.

"The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has an open, delineated nose; there’s just a touch of VA in the background, albeit nothing to get too concerned about. The palate is fleshy and well balanced, displaying very fine tension and a sense of energy. Almost Morey-like in structure on the spicy, lingering finish. There’s a lot going on here – and I like that. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting." -Neal Martin

"The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes is a real success, wafting from the glass with notes of raspberries, cherries, rose petals, dark spices and grilled squab. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with satiny tannins, a succulent core of fruit and an elegant sense of effortlessness that exemplifies the vintage at its best, concluding with a long finish." -William Kelley

"Les Charmes largely escaped the frost in 2016 so there was no need to reduce the crop in 2017. This comes from two parcels of 40 and 70-year-old vines which make up a total of 0.25ha. There’s a hint of good reduction on the nose which leads you into a palate that's crunchy, chalky and refreshing, unfurling flavours of raspberry and pomegranate supported by polished tannins."
