What is this wine?

Domaine Michel Lafarge, a benchmark estate in Volnay, has been crafting elegant, terroir-transparent wines since the 19th century. Now led by Frédéric and Chantal Lafarge, the domaine farms biodynamically and vinifies with whole clusters, native yeasts, and minimal new oak, preserving the finesse and purity that define its style.
The Volnay 1er Cru “Les Mitans” 2022 comes from one of Volnay’s most celebrated mid-slope Premier Crus, with thin limestone soils that yield wines of remarkable perfume and precision. The site is renowned for expressing the essence of Volnay’s grace and harmony.

Why get this wine?

“Les Mitans” is a Lafarge signature, often considered the domaine’s most archetypal Volnay—delicate yet deep, floral yet structured. In 2022, the warm, balanced growing season produced a wine of radiant fruit and polished tannins without sacrificing Lafarge’s hallmark elegance. A must for collectors and Burgundy purists alike.

What does this wine taste like?

Beautifully aromatic, with red cherry, wild strawberry, rose petal, and subtle spice. The palate is silky and precise, with fine tannins, bright acidity, and a lingering, mineral finish.

When should you drink this wine?

Decant young bottles for an hour, or cellar for 2028–2040. Pair with roast duck, squab, or dishes featuring earthy mushrooms to echo its floral, savory depth.

Lafarge is one of the great names in Volnay, some would say the greatest. His wines are sought out the world over, and we are always excited when our allocation arrives.

Lafarge’s home territory is Volnay, though he also has holdings in nearby Beaune and Meursault. This is an old estate that started bottling their wines in the early 1900s. Only Armand Rousseau, the DRC, and maybe two or three other growers have that kind of history.

The wines of Lafarge are magical. Despite being made in a decidedly old-school style—really no different than a generation or even two ago—they display incredible purity and not a hint of rusticity. It is the same kind of magic that Jacky Truchot was able to conjure. We only wish we could get more.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

"Note: from Mitans proper; destemmed manually. A more elegant and airier nose is comprised by very fresh aromas of mostly red berry, floral and spice wisps. The caressing and lacy yet nicely punchy and rich middleweight flavors possess a lovely sense of harmony on the moderately firm and beautifully balanced finale that stays on the palate an impressively long time. This is lovely and understated, in fact, it's very Mitans.*Burghound Sweet Spot Outstandiung!*"

"The 2022 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru has a pretty, quite effervescent nose with Morello cherries, wild strawberry and wilted rose petal scents, delicate but with plenty of energy. The medium-bodied palate has fine-grain tannins, very harmonious and silky smooth, with a lacy structure on the finish. This is going to be VERY tempting in its youth." -Neal Martin

Robert Parker

RP 92-93
"The 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Mitans is rich and layered, exhibiting aromas of cherries, sweet spices, orange zest and peony. Medium to full-bodied, deep and enveloping, it's built around sweet, powdery tannins." -William Kelley
