What is this wine?
Luddite is a boutique winery in Bot River, South Africa, founded in 1999 by Niels and Penny Verburg. Known first for their bold Shiraz, the estate also produces the Saboteur range—wines made to be expressive, generous, and approachable. The Saboteur Red 2021 is a blend of Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon, with proportions changing slightly each year. It is fermented naturally and aged mostly in large, old oak, emphasizing fruit purity and texture. The 2021 vintage was cool and even, yielding balanced, aromatic reds with excellent structure.

Why get this wine?
This blend captures the heart of modern South African reds: ripe yet fresh, serious but unpretentious. Luddite’s Saboteur Red consistently delivers richness and drinkability at an excellent price, making it a great alternative to Rhône blends or modern Bordeaux-style wines. A perfect bottle for both casual enjoyment and pairing with hearty meals.

What does this wine taste like?
Dark berry fruit—blackberry, plum, and black cherry—layered with spice, herbs, and a touch of smoke. Full-bodied with supple tannins, lively acidity, and a long, savory finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Drink now through 2030. Great with braai (barbecue), lamb, burgers, or roasted root vegetables.

Robert Parker

RP 89
"With the catchline "Made by Luddites," the Luddite 2021 Saluez Le Saboteur Red Blend is 60% Shiraz, 15% Grenache Noir, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Mourvèdre. This is a larger production of 23,800 bottles. The wine shows lots of ripeness with black cherry liqueur, chestnut honey, dried rose petal and steeped tea. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache Noir and Mourvèdre varieties were fermented in small batches in open bins, with some stems included. The Shiraz was mostly fermented in stainless steel. Some batches completed malolactic fermentation in barrel to add fullness to the wine. A tiny part of the Grenache Noir is actually from the 2022 vintage and was added in order to lift the red fruit spectrum. The wine spends 12 months in barrel with 20% new oak." -Monica Larner
