Sylvain Cathiard’s 2018 Aux Murgers is a Premier Cru Nuits-Saint-Georges from a steep, stony site that yields concentrated, structured Pinot Noir. Farming is meticulous and low-intervention, with minimal new oak and careful extraction.

The wine offers dark fruit, violet, and savory spice, with firm tannins and mineral lift. A powerful, age-worthy bottling that balances richness with precision.

Left Sustainably Farmed

Cathiard is a tiny domain - there never is very much wine. You enter a spick and span white stucco suburban home in the center of the small village of Vosne Romanee. There is a walled vineyard outside the front door. Go down the staircase and you are in a minuscule cuverie and barrel room. Not a lot of barrels here either. No wonder the wine is sold in 6 bottle cases.

Sebastien Cathiard has been slowly assuming control of this top estate in Vosne-Romanée from his father Sylvain. He is now fully in charge, but the wines have been so good for so long that he wisely has changed very little. They continue to farm meticulously, de-stem and rigorously sort all the fruit prior to fermentation. The only thing he has changed is the gradual reduction of new oak, seeking a bit more purity of terroir expression.

"A softly spicy and very earthy nose speaks of a layered mix of both red and dark fruit elements. There is a highly beguiling inner mouth perfume to the appealingly textured and slightly bigger flavors that are shaped by firm but relatively fine tannins on the velvety and sappy finish. This is presently quite seductive but the structure is sufficiently prominent that I suspect that this will close down after bottling and require at least some patience before it will again be approachable. This is an NSG that wants to be noticed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins and a fine line of acidity.
