What is this wine?
Domaine Sylvain Cathiard, now guided by Sébastien Cathiard, is one of the most coveted names in Burgundy, with tiny production and a cult following worldwide. Aux Reignots is a steep, limestone-rich premier cru that sits just above Romanée-Conti, making it one of Vosne-Romanée’s most hallowed terroirs. The 2016 vintage was marked by spring frost and low yields, producing intensely concentrated but remarkably balanced wines.

Why get this wine?
Cathiard’s wines are nearly impossible to source, and Aux Reignots is among his most prized bottlings—a premier cru often described as “grand cru in all but name.” The 2016 vintage is a rarity: perfumed, structured, and long-lived, with microscopic production due to the frost. For serious collectors, this is an essential piece of modern Burgundy history.

What does this wine taste like?
Seductive red and black cherry, raspberry, and plum layered with exotic spice, rose petal, and Vosne’s signature silky minerality. Medium-bodied but intense, with fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, perfumed finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Best 2025–2045. Decant young bottles. A natural match for refined dishes like duck, squab, or truffle risotto.

Cathiard is a tiny domain - there never is very much wine. You enter a spick and span white stucco suburban home in the center of the small village of Vosne Romanee. There is a walled vineyard outside the front door. Go down the staircase and you are in a minuscule cuverie and barrel room. Not a lot of barrels here either. No wonder the wine is sold in 6 bottle cases.

Sebastien Cathiard has been slowly assuming control of this top estate in Vosne-Romanée from his father Sylvain. He is now fully in charge, but the wines have been so good for so long that he wisely has changed very little. They continue to farm meticulously, de-stem and rigorously sort all the fruit prior to fermentation. The only thing he has changed is the gradual reduction of new oak, seeking a bit more purity of terroir expression.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

"There is a trace of reduction present but not so much as to completely mask the spice elements. Otherwise there is really lovely tension to the intensely mineral-driven medium-bodied and beautifully precise flavors that culminate in an understated and mildly austere finish that delivers excellent depth and length. This too possesses excellent development potential but like the Aux Thorey at least some patience is strongly advised." -Allen Meadows

"There are five barrels of the 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots, which Sebastien mentioned was not touched by the frost. It has a graceful, elegant bouquet that unfolds in the glass: precise scents of raspberry and black cherry fruit interlaced by minerals and hints of wilted violet petals. The oak here is very nicely subsumed. The palate is underpinned by succulent tannin, lovely crisp black and red fruit with an almost clinical, precise, focused finish." -Neal Martin

"60% new oak. Dark crimson. Cool and dark on the nose. These Cathiard wines all have a very strong family likeness, as if the winemaking were, for the moment at least, masking the terroir. Fragrant with fine, fine dark fruit. Lovely finesse, very fine tannins. All very dark and sober but there s dark-red fruit at the core. Bone dry and embryonic. Chewy, fresh and dark on the finish. A little severe now but should come round." -Julia Harding MW

"The Reignots hails from the domaine’s youngest vines, and though Cathiard thinks this will pick up some additional mid-palate amplitude after a second winter on its fine lees, it can’t match the concentration of the more mature vineyards. Aromas of raspberry, rich spice, liquorice and game bird precede a delicate, ample but medium-bodied wine which should be comparatively accessible in its youth."
